Spring break is almost here! The one thing many students forget to think about while planning their trip is safety. It’s easy for something to go wrong while on spring break, especially in a different country. In 2002, The American Medical Association released a report which stated: “Spring break is no longer an innocent respite from the rigors of college academics; its potentially life threatening.” Here are a few things to keep in mind while anxiously awaiting March 9th.
If you’re traveling somewhere tropic for spring break make sure to constantly put on sun tan lotion! Many bottles will say “water proof” but in actuality you get burned more easily in the water due to the reflection and the protection doesn’t always last. So the moment you get out of the water, slap on some more sunscreen! Also try to avoid being on the beach during the peak sun hours, which is between 1 to 3 PM.
For the people who are of the drinking age in the United States or at your spring break destination, be responsible. In 2004, there were 5,220 alcohol-related Spring Break arrests in Florida alone. Especially be careful while drinking in a hot tub. Most people don’t know that alcohol dilates blood vessels and lowers blood pressure to a dangerous level. While drinking in a hot tub, the alcoholic effects are stronger and can lead to drowning or unconsciousness.
While spring break can be crazy, make sure you use your personal judgment. More than ½ of people engaging in sexual intercourse on spring break admit it was “unplanned” and random. Out of those people engaging in sex, ½ of them will not use protection. That may not seem like a lot, but studies show that on and average American campus 80% of students only have sex once or zero times a year.
Lastly, never let any one in your group walk around alone, during the day or at night. In recent years there have been frequent reports of spring breaks gone wrong all over the news, don’t let that be you. If you have any questions about more safety tips visit the sites at the bottom of the blog.
